Grandma Gross, Darlene, grew up in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. She had 2 sisters, she liked to roller skate, she liked to write, and . Her Grandpa Gross, James, grew up in Lastrup, Minnesota. He had 2 brothers and 2 sisters, he helped out at his father's grocery store, could fix just about anything, and joined the Navy. Darlene and Jim met at the Falls Ballroom and fell in love. They married September 1st, 1956 and went on to have 4 daughters. As a family, Grandma and Grandpa and the 4 girls traveled, went camping, visited grandparents, and had family dinners together. Eventually the 4 daughters grew up and had their own kids and mama was born. Mama spent time with her grandparents at their Camper at Camp Holiday, and had Christmas, holidays, and birthday celebrations with the entire family. Grandma and mama were very close. Mama has the wedding ring that grandpa presented to grandma all those years ago in 1956. Grandma and Grandpa are buried at Fort Snelling.

Once upon a time there was a beetle who loved to tell everyone how fast he could run. “I am the fastest insect in the park,” he would say. His slow and steady friend the snail, tired of hearing him brag, challenged him to a race. “Ha,” the beetle thought to himself, “there is no way a snail could ever win against me.” On the day of the race, all of the insects in the park gathered to watch. The centipede waved a checkered flag to start the race. The beetle zoomed past the starting line as fast as he could, while the snail carefully inched herself forward bit by bit. The beetle cried out “You will never win this race at that slow, slow pace.” Out of breath from running, the beetle eventually reached a small pond of water. He thought, “I have plenty of time. I just will go around the pond.” The beetle sped off on his way. Inch by inch the snail crawled along the path. As she reached the pond, she thought, “It would be much shorter if I could somehow float across the water.” Perhaps I could build a boat. The snail gathered up some leaves, twigs and vine. She fashioned a small boat that helped her glide smoothly across the water of the pond. When she got to the other side, she hopped off the boat and could see all of her friends waiting for her at the finish line. Little by little the snail crept along the path until she crossed the finish line at long last. All of her friends cheered. “Hooray for snail!” they cried. A moment later the beetle came running across the finish line. “I can’t believe you beat me!” he said. “You know,” the snail replied with a smile, “being the fastest isn’t always everything”. “Sometimes if you just slow down for a moment and think about your challenge, you can come up with great solutions.”

In Toddler's room, with tools so grand, They learned together, hand in hand. Claire built towers reaching high, Grace sorted beads, counting by. Lily poured water with careful grace, A smile lighting up her face. "Look at us," they'd say with glee, "We're growing up, just wait and see!" In Children's House, more fun was found, With books and nature all around. They read and wrote, and counted too, Exploring worlds so fresh and new. Miss Rebekah taught Claire math so grand, With challenging work and a trinomial cube in hand. Miss Cassandra lent her a sweater so snug, A gesture of kindness, like a warm hug. "Claire, Grace, Lily," guides would sing, "You can do most anything. With your friends right by your side, The world is wide, your hearts are wide." Around the sun, they'd walk with pride, A birthday journey, side by side. With each new year, a story spun, Of growth and learning, joy and fun. Now the day has come to part, With memories dear, within their hearts. Graduating to kindergarten they go, With courage and love, their hearts aglow. "Thank you, guides," they said with cheer, "For all the love and care this year. We'll take your lessons, near and far, And always remember who we are."
