Mr. Smith sees that Harvey gets sad and explains to him what deductions are. He starts with federal taxes which is about 8 dollars from Harvey's paycheck. The government collects taxes from all citizens to built bridges and highways and fund the army. He then explains what the social security deduction is for and also, medicare, state and city taxes. At the end Harvey is glad that the government is thinking to save money for him so he gets it when he retires. Sparky is Harvey's dog. He is sad when Harvey is sad and then gets happy at the end when Harvey understands how taxes work.

One afternoon, Papa Bear called Brother Bear into the living room with an excited but nervous look on his face. “Brother Bear,” Papa Bear said gently, “I want you to meet someone. This is Lady Bear. She’s a very special friend of mine.” Brother Bear felt a knot in his stomach. He wasn’t sure what to think. He missed Mama Bear and had hoped everything would go back to the way it used to be. She had soft fur and bright eyes, but Brother Bear didn’t know if he was ready for something new. “Hi, Brother Bear,” Lady Bear said warmly. “I’ve heard so much about you. I’m happy to meet you and spend some time together.” Brother Bear stayed quiet. He wasn’t sure if he liked the idea of someone new coming into their lives. Papa Bear noticed and knelt down next to him. “I know this is hard,” Papa Bear said softly. “We all miss Mama Bear, and nothing will change that. Lady Bear isn’t here to replace her. She’s just here to get to know us and help us feel happy again.” Brother Bear looked at Lady Bear. She seemed kind, but the thought of everything changing still felt strange. “I miss Mama,” he whispered. Lady Bear nodded. “I understand, Brother Bear. It’s okay to miss her. I’m not here to take her place. I just want to be here for you and your family, and maybe, in time, we can be friends.” That night, Lady Bear helped Papa Bear make dinner, and as they sat around the table, Brother Bear found himself talking about his day. It felt different, but not in a bad way. Maybe, just maybe, things could start to feel like a family.
